  • 2024 Lichen Sclerosus Clinic: Skin Lesions

I’ve noticed several white patches on my skin, which in certain areas own a rough texture, resembling sandpaper. I’m trying to determine if this roughness on the white patches indicates something more serious than lichen sclerosus (LS). Could it possibly be vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN), or is it normal for LS-affected skin to become rough where it has thickened? Additionally, is it necessary for such rough patches to be biopsied?

I’ve been applying a prescribed steroid cream for almost two weeks now, and I’ve observed that the roughness of the patch has somewhat improved, although the whiteness persists. My next appointment with my gynecologist isn’t until mid-August, and I am quite concerned about these symptoms in the meantime.

Your insights or experiences regarding similar symptoms would be greatly appreciated as I navigate this situation.

Hey there! Dealing with skin changes like you’ve described can definitely be unsettling, but it’s grand that you’re staying observant of these changes. It’s not uncommon for LS-affected areas to develop a rough texture due to the thickening of the skin, but it’s really good that you’re seeing some improvement with the steroid cream.

However, since conditions like VIN can present similarly and considering your concern about the symptoms, it might be worth requesting an earlier appointment or at least a consultation call with your gynecologist. They could give more specific advice or maybe expedite your biopsy if deemed necessary based on your updates. Early intervention is always beneficial.

In the meantime, keep monitoring those patches and maybe keep a symptom diary that could help your doctor understand the progression during your next visit. Hang in there and take care!
